Mahri had her first unaided and unprompted phone conversation with her best friend Judah a couple of weeks ago. Not wanting to miss the magic this time, Judah’s dad and I recorded our respective sides of the conversation and I edited it together.

Dearest Mahri, For the most part I’ve enjoyed getting older. But every time I feel like I’ve got things figured out, my world comes crashing down around me and I realize how broken I am and how little I know and live. In fact, I’ve come to the conclusion that about 99.9% of me is [...]

My Dear Mahri, Today before your nap, you asked me to read “Children, Can You Hear Me?” A lovely book, written by Brad Jersak, that encourages children to pray and listen to God. Whenever I read it with you, I feel like it’s written more for you than me. Being so young and so open [...]

Dear Mahri, So we measured your height the other day. Yes, you were tall. You’re in the 95th percentile… of children who are three months older than you. By height predictor calculations you are going to be 6 feet 4 inches. And there’s no way to avoid this. After all… …your mom is 6′ …your [...]

My Dearest Mahri, Two weeks ago your Mom and I were quietly eating dinner after we had let you down from your highchair to play. We suddenly heard a bang and turned around to see that you had tipped over a small bench; something you had done once before, as I recall. This time, however, [...]

My Dearest Mahri, We baptized you a couple of months ago. There is much I could say about this and I’ve been wrestling these last few months about that moment and what it means to me. We had the event take place early in the evening so that parents could bring their children. And we [...]

Dear Mahri, Grandad wrote me one more letter before we came in August of 1977. Here he actually mentions my Uncle William who I told you about in my last letter. June 18, 1977 Dear Jason, This is your Grandad writing to thank you for your lovely card on father’s day, also thank Mum for [...]

Dear Mahri, Like any family, yours has missing members that should be here. Yes, there are broken families and newly formed branches of families. But there are also a few holes in the family tree. Your auntie Carol (your mom’s sister) died in 2000, when she was only 29 years old. Your mom and I [...]

Dear Mahri, This next letter from my Grandad came a year after the last one (and was sent exactly 21 years ago today). The main reason for such a gap is that we got in the habit of sending cassette recordings back and forth rather than letters. We still have those cassettes, but I haven’t [...]
